1. History

  • Bandung Institute of Technology (1959-present)

History of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) began in the early 20th century, on the initiative of ruling society at that time. The initial purpose of its establishment was to meet the needs of technical personnel, which was difficult, due to the disruption of relations between the Netherlands and its colonies, in the archipelago, due to the First World War.

Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (often shortened to TH te Bandoeng, TH Bandung, or THS) is the beginning of the ITB campus. Established on 3 July 1920 as the first high school in the Dutch East Indies.

TH Bandung was first opened with one faculty namely de Faculteit van Technische Wetenschap which has only one part namely de afdeeling der Wegen Waterbouwkunde.

ITB Campus is the place where the first Indonesian president, Soekarno, earned his degree in Civil Engineering. The length of study to become an engineer is four years.

Up to its closure in 1942, THS has three parts (afdeeling) namely Civil (1920), Chemistry (1940), Machinery and Electricity (1941); but the last two sections have not yet graduated an engineer.

During the Japanese occupation, efforts to reopen the lectures of TH Bandung were firmly rejected, but research activities in the laboratories of TH Bandung campus were allowed. The laboratory community is called Institute of Tropical Scientific Research (Institute of Tropical Scientific Research) which is manned by many academic staff of TH Bandung.

  • The first decade of the 1960s

ITB began to nurture and equip itself with the kepranataan that must be held. During this period the preparation of filling the organization of education and teaching, and completing the number and increase the ability of faculty with the assignment to study abroad.

  • The second decade of the 1970s

ITB is colored by difficult times arising from the first period. The established academic unit is transformed into a work unit that also functions as a socio-economic unit that is limited to a semi-autonomous institution.

The level of academics is increasing, but the assignment of study abroad is decreasing. Internal facilities and services are increasingly being utilized.

  • The third decade of the 1980s

Characterized by kepranataan and teaching and learning process that began to enter the modern era with the campus physical facilities are more equipped. The number of undergraduate graduates is increasing and post-graduate programs begin to be opened. This situation is supported by the improving socio-political and economic conditions of the country.

  • The fourth decade of the 1990s

The engineering college which originally had only one department of education, now has twenty-six Department of Undergraduate Programs, including the Department of Sociotechnology, thirty four Masters / S2 Study Programs and three S3 / Doctoral Studies Fields covering elements of science, technology, art, business and the human sciences.

Now, with the annual supply of the best Indonesian students, the Bandung Institute of Technology is one of the best science, technology and arts centers in Indonesia.

Bandung Institute of Technology also supports students and their social activities by supporting the set of students in each department.

Each year, the Bandung Institute of Technology chooses a best student to be sent to national student elections. Ganesha Prize is the name of the award for those who get this best student degree. This award is usually given formally at the ceremony of new admissions.

Recognizing the limitations of the Ganesha Campus land associated with the increasing need of facilities and infrastructure to realize its academic vision, in the year 2010 it was implemented a multicampus ITB policy that gave rise to the terms “On-G campus” and “Off-G campus“.

The term “On-G campus” refers to the Campus ITB Ganesha while the campuses of ITB outside it are referred to as “Off-G campus”.

ITB Off-G Campus that has been realized and started to build is ITB Campus Jatinangor. Other “ITB Off-G campus” being planned is ITB Bekasi Campus and ITB Walini Campus.

Student dormitories, faculty housing, and administrative headquarters are not located on the main campus yet within easy reach. Facilities available on campus include bookstores, post office, cafeteria, bank, and clinic.
